NBA G LEAGUE FAQs

What is the NBA G League?

The NBA G League, formerly the NBA Development League or NBA D-League, is the NBA’s official minor league, preparing players, coaches, officials, trainers and front office staff for the NBA while acting as the league’s research and development laboratory.

Beginning with the 2017-18 season, the NBA D-League became the NBA G League as part of a multiyear expanded partnership between the NBA and Gatorade.

When was the NBA G League established?

The league began play as the NBA Development League beginning with the 2001-02 season. It enters its 26th season in 2026-27.

How do the Grand Rapids Gold get their players?

The Grand Rapids Gold roster is composed of players acquired from the G League draft, the available player pool, and Two-way/NBA Assignment players.

How do Grand Rapids Gold contracts work?

  • What is a two-way player?
    • A Two-Way contract allows an NBA team to have up to three players split their season between the NBA and G League. These players spend the majority of their time in the G League while remaining eligible to play a limited number of games with the NBA team. Players with four or fewer years of NBA service are eligible for Two-Way contracts and receive a flat salary equal to 50% of the NBA minimum salary for a player with zero years of service. Two-Way contracts can last one or two seasons and can be converted to a standard NBA contract at any point.
  • What is an Exhibit 10 player?
    • An Exhibit 10 contract is a one-year, minimum-salary NBA contract that includes an optional bonus of $5,000 to $85,300. A player earns the bonus if they are waived by the NBA team, sign with that team’s G League affiliate and remain with the affiliate for at least 60 days. If the NBA team converts the contract to a Two-Way contract before the start of the regular season, the Exhibit 10 bonus is converted into guaranteed salary. An NBA team may have up to six players with Exhibit 10 attachments on its roster at one time.
  • What is an assignment player?
    • An Assignment Player is an NBA player who is assigned by his NBA team to its G League affiliate while remaining under his NBA contract. Unlike players signed directly to a G League contract, Assignment Players continue to be NBA-contracted players throughout their time in the G League. The NBA team can assign the player to its G League affiliate and recall him to the NBA at any time.

How long is the season, and when do the playoffs start?

The season begins with the G League Tip-Off Tournament, which starts in early November (November 6 for the 2026–27 season) with the goal of qualifying for the NBA G League Winter Showcase in December. Teams play 14 regional games during this stretch, and the top eight performers qualify to compete for a $100,000 grand prize. All 23 other teams will play  minimum of 2 games at the Winter Showcase, apart from the tournament. The G League regular season begins in late December and features a 36-game schedule, culminated by the G League Playoffs and Finals in late March.

How many NBA G League players have made it to the NBA?

To start the 2025-26 season, a record-tying 51 percent of players on opening-night NBA rosters had NBA G League experience. This group includes both players who were assigned from the NBA to the NBA G League and players who were called up from the NBA G League to the NBA at some point in their careers.

At least 30 NBA G League prospects have been called up to the NBA in each of the past 14 seasons. A record 131 players were assigned to the NBA G League a total of 588 times in 2021-22, while a record 164 Gatorade Call-Ups of 117 different players occurred during the 2021-22 season. In 2024-25, 109 different players were assigned a total of 481 times, with 79 total Gatorade Call-Ups.

Which NBA players have played in the NBA G League?

Several notable NBA players have spent time in the NBA G League, including Pascal Siakam, Rudy Gobert, Amen Thompson, Jordan Poole and Clint Capela. Other players who have earned NBA opportunities after playing in the G League include Danny Green, Alex Caruso, Fred VanVleet, Duncan Robinson, Christian Wood and Hassan Whiteside.

How long are the quarters in an NBA G League game?

Like the NBA, NBA G League games consist of four 12-minute quarters. If a game is tied at the end of regulation, overtime is played using the Final Target Score format. Seven points are added to the tied score, and the first team to reach the resulting target score wins.

Are any of the rules in NBA G League games different from the rules in NBA games?

Yes. The NBA uses the NBA G League as a testing ground for new rules each season. Some previous experimental rules that were eventually implemented in the NBA include the Coach’s Challenge and the 14 Second Shot Clock Reset on offensive rebounds.

Beginning in the 2019-20 season, the NBA G League implemented the One Free Throw Rule. This innovative rule states that one free throw shall be taken in all free throw situations during the first 46 minutes of the game. The free throw is worth the value of total free throws allotted under standard NBA free throw rules. For example, a player shooting a 3-pointer who is fouled and misses the shot takes one free throw worth three points. During the last two minutes of a game and overtime standard NBA free throw rules apply.

What are the overtime rules for the G League?

Beginning in 2022-23, games that advance to overtime will be determined by a Final Target Score.  The winner of an overtime game during the season will be the first team to reach or surpass the Final Target Score, which will be the tied score after four quarters plus seven.  For example, if the teams are tied at 100-100, the Final Target Score would be 107.  Overtime will be untimed and games will end when a team makes a basket or free throw to reach or surpass the Final Target Score.
